Plante vivace de 30-80 cm, glabre, à bulbe ovoïde entouré de nombreux bulbilles, à forte odeur alliée ; tige cylindrique, pleine, feuillée jusqu'au milieu
Écologie : (répartition d'après la flore) Lieux sablonneux cultivés ou incultes, dans presque toute la France et en Corse.
Répartition hors de France : Europe centrale et méridionale ; Syrie ; Amérique boréale.

A rather slender plant with a bulbil-bearing head 15-30 mm diam., with or without flowers, on a terete scape 30-75 cm long, growing from a bulb about 15 mm wide.
Ecology UK: (distribution according to flora) It is a common weed of cornfields throughout lowland Britain, southwards from Aberdeen and in S. and E. Ireland.

Fleurs : rose pâle ou blanchâtres, peu nombreuses, en tête globuleuse serrée, souvent toute bulbillifère ; pédicelles renflés-globuleux sous la fleur, 4-5 fois plus longs qu'elle ; périanthe en cloche ; étamines saillantes, les 3 intérieures à filets trifides, la pointe médiane plus courte
Flowers: 4 mm diam., in a dense head 20 mm wide, sometimes mixed with greenish bulbils, sometimes [usually] without bulbils, but most commonly with greenish or reddish bulbils only (var. compactum Thuill); bract short, with a cuspidate point; perianth segments erect, pinkish, faintly keeled; alternate filament bifid, with long, filiform lobes and the stamen within the sinus as long as the lobes; other stamens simple with slightly dilated filament.
